The Math Just Changed!

Last week, my focus was on securing Direct Access. This week, we need to talk about survival.

The recruiting math just shifted across the board, and if your family is still operating on last year's assumptions, you are going to get left behind. For the Class of 2027, the Division 1 window is rapidly closing—it is time to check your ego and pivot to the D2 and D3 programs where your talent is actually valued.

For the '28s, '29s, and '30s, the landscape is about to get even tighter. The NCAA is preparing to drop a 5th-year eligibility bomb that will gridlock college rosters for the next three cycles. Associate D1 Coach Marsha Lycan just sounded the alarm publicly, and you need to listen.

Here is your game plan to survive the squeeze:

🎓 Girls Soccer - Class of 2027: The "24 Club”

The D1 Reality Check: Go Where You Are Wanted!

24 Schools. That is the reality for the Class of 2027 in the Northeast.

We are officially down to the final 25% of Division 1 programs with active roster spots. And let me give you the unvarnished truth: many of these remaining spots belong to low-level D1 programs that will be scrambling to piece their rosters together all the way through next year.

The recruiting market changes by the hour. Between silent commitments and players utilizing extra eligibility, college rosters are a constantly moving target. But this data is your benchmark, and if you ignore it, you are going to be left without a jersey.

If you’re a '27 still blasting generic emails to 100 different D1 colleges hoping for a miracle, you are just spinning your wheels. The market has spoken.

The Reality Check: If your phone isn't ringing from a D1 coach right now, your strategy needs to shift to D2 and D3 programs immediately. Stop begging for attention from programs that have already closed their boards, and stop chasing a D1 label just for your ego.

Go where you are wanted. Go where a coaching staff is actually going to show you some love and value your talent. You don't have to completely abandon your top D1 targets, but 80% of your time and energy must now be focused on the levels where you actually have leverage.

The Next Step: You need to recalculate your target list today, before the D2 and D3 money dries up, too. Stop wasting another weekend sending useless emails to ghosts.

Head to our website and run your profile through the Athletic Fit software, and let the data show you exactly which D2 and D3 programs actually match your current academic and athletic level.

Stop acting like a fan. Start being a recruit!

🎓 Boys Soccer – Class of 2027: The Summer Evaluation Sprint!

Boys 2027: Stop Spamming the Same Stale Highlight Reel

Let me guess: you are about to send that same 5-minute highlight video to your target list for the fourth time this year, hoping this is the time they finally watch it.

Stop. If they didn’t watch it in February, they aren’t watching it now. Sending the same stale link over and over doesn't show persistence; it just trains college coaches to automatically delete your emails.

The Reality: College coaches don't want to re-watch your life story. As we head into the summer evaluation sprint, their boards are tightening. They are looking for one thing: progression. Are you sharper than you were in the fall? Are you physically stronger? Are you adjusting to a higher speed of play?

If you want to actually force a coach to stop scrolling and look at your profile, you need to execute the Micro-Update.

Here is exactly how you handle your outreach this month:

  • Kill the 5-Minute Reel: Cut the fluff. Take 10 to 15 seconds of your absolute best sequence from this spring. Give them one high-level clip of you scoring a screamer, winning an aerial duel, or finishing under pressure.

  • The Quick Hit: Pair that clip with a concrete, data-driven update. "Coach, we locked up the division this weekend. Here is a 12-second clip of me scoring in the MLS Next. Looking forward to proving this in person at your ID camp next month."

Keep it short. Keep it fresh. Prove you are actively developing, not just resting on last year's tape.

The Next Move: Do not guess what your "best" 10 seconds looks like. What looks like a great play to a parent is often a red flag to a D1 coach.

I put a complete breakdown in the Classroom called the "Lethal 15-Second Hook." It shows you exactly what college recruiters are looking for in the opening moments of your film. Join the Skool Community today, watch the module, and stop burning your leads with recycled film.

🔥 The NCAA Roster Squeeze: How the 5th-Year Rule Impacts the '28s, '29s, and '30s

Right now, a hurricane is brewing at the NCAA level, and most parents are completely oblivious to it.

Associate D1 Coach Marsha Lycan just sounded the alarm publicly, and you need to pay attention. Next month, the NCAA is expected to approve a 5th year of eligibility.

For the players currently in college, that's great. For the high school classes of 2028, 2029, and 2030? It is a mathematical nightmare.

Women’s soccer operates under a strict 28-player cap. As Marsha pointed out: "You cannot recruit for FOUR classes for years, then suddenly force programs to fit FIVE classes onto the same roster without student-athletes paying the price. Because when seniors stay, someone else loses a spot."

The Class of 2027 is already getting squeezed with cuts and de-commitments. That bottleneck is going to trickle directly down to the '28s, '29s, and '30s.

"College recruiting happens YEARS in advance," Marsha warns. "Families and athletes make life-changing decisions based on the rules in place at the time." The rules are changing again. The margin for error just went to zero. Here is how you survive the squeeze.

🔥 Class of 2028: The June 15th Filter (Strategy vs. Hope)

We are exactly 21 days out from June 15th. With this new 5th-year rule looming, D1 coaches are terrified of making a roster mistake. They don't have the space to take a chance on a "maybe."

This is the timeline where families either execute a strategy or rely on hope. And in my experience, hope gets you left behind.

To make sure you aren’t invisible when the clock hits zero, these three adjustments are non-negotiable over the next four weeks:

  • 1. The Academic Proof: Send your updated transcripts or mid-semester grades to your target list now. If coaches are forced to choose between a 5th-year senior and an incoming freshman, you better be a no-brainer in the classroom. It makes you a low-risk investment.

  • 2. The 15-Second Film Rule: Drop the long introductory reels. Put your highest-level sequences first. If a coach doesn't see D1 pace and decision-making in the first 15 seconds, they’re hitting delete.

  • 3. Precision Outreach: Stop wasting time with generic, mass-blast emails. If your message starts with "To Whom It May Concern," it’s going straight to the trash.

Stop Being a "Donor" Parents are panic-buying spots at July ID camps. 2028’s hold your cash. Until June 15th arrives, you are just a donor funding a university's summer budget. If the phone stays silent on June 15th, do not double down by writing that school a $500 check for a camp. Pivot your energy immediately toward the programs that are actually engaging with you.

The Scalable Fix: Do not let June 15th catch you off guard with a leaking foundation. I have a complete breakdown in the Classroom called 'The Silence Protocol' that gives you the exact scripts to force a reply before the window closes. Join the Skool Community today and get your outreach dialed in.

🌱 Class of 2029 & 2030: Building the Foundation

If you are a Freshman or 8th grader, let's kill the word "recruiting" right now. Your focus is strictly on acclimation. Because of this NCAA 5th-year rule, by the time you are fighting for a roster spot, the standard is going to be incredibly high. You are going to be measured against older, more physical players.

Most kids are "town superstars." They are comfortable. A college ID clinic is the opposite of comfortable. It’s loud, the coaching is demanding, and every player on that field was the best player in their town, too.

Learn the Skill of Being Watched Playing in front of college coaches is a specific skill. I’ve seen elite players completely fold during their Junior year because it was the first time they felt the weight of a D1 coach watching their every touch. They get "heavy legs" and play safe. You don't want your kid’s first "pressure cook" to happen when a scholarship is actually on the line.

Grow Into the Standard Use this summer's camps as a training ground.

  • Handle the Noise: Get them used to coaches who demand more than their club coach.

  • The Intensity Gap: College-level sessions move faster. The ball moves faster, the decisions are quicker. This is where they learn the speed of play required to eventually beat out an older roster.

The 30-Day Scholarship Ready Plan

Marsha Lycan said it best: "More cuts. More decommitments. More athletes caught in the middle of ever-changing rules."

You cannot control the NCAA, but you can control your player's brand. I built the 30-Day Scholarship Ready Plan to be your insurance policy against this exact type of chaos.

We don't just "help" you; we give you the exact framework to ensure your profile meets the elite standard required to actually get a response when roster spots are this tight.

  • The Video Audit Framework: How to cut the fluff and move your "Lethal" clips to the first 15 seconds.

  • The Outreach Protocol: How to kill the "Dear Coach" templates and build a pitch that forces a click.

  • The Foundation: Taking you from "Invisible" to "Scholarship Ready" in 30 days.

A single mistake in this environment can cost you $100,000 in tuition. Don't leave your kid's future to a "good enough" highlight tape.

We don’t just talk about this; we execute it!

🏆 The Proof: From "Complex" to Committed

Recruiting isn’t a mystery, and it’s certainly not about luck. It’s about having a repeatable process. When you have a clear map, the "complexity" of the College landscape suddenly becomes manageable.

Take a look at Jaden his family reached out to share the news that he has officially committed to Bates College (DIII).

Here is what Jaden’s dad had to say about the process:

"We sought Steve Coxon’s services to boost the recruiting efforts in our son’s senior year. Steve was knowledgeable and confident, providing great advice and legwork to help decide and contact our target schools. His interest, help, and communication were very valuable in landing our son a spot.

- Mike Peercy

Jaden didn't just "show up" and get an offer. His family used our platform, stayed consistent with their outreach, and executed the exact strategy I’ve built from 18 years of sitting on the other side of the recruiting desk.

This is exactly what we do at the Soccer Network. We take the "noise" and the confusion out of the equation so your athlete can focus on the result: Getting the commitment!
