Showcase Tournaments Unlocked: Your Path to College Recruitment!
A Pivotal Time for College Showcases
The next few weeks are huge for high school athletes—it’s prime time for college showcase tournaments!
Showcase tournaments are a critical step in the college recruitment process for high school athletes. These events bring college coaches together to scout talent, and if you’re on their radar and you impress, they may contact you to begin the recruitment process.
But how do you stand out in a crowded field and gain their attention? Here’s everything you need to know to maximize your showcase experience.
A Coach's Perspective
Showcase Tournaments are a numbers game!
To understand the importance of showcase tournaments, think about them from a college coach’s point of view. Coaches often spend back-to-back weekends traveling, staying in hotels, and watching countless games. With limited time, their focus is often on specific athletes from a pre-determined list, observing small sections of games rather than full matches to evaluate their prospects quickly.
If you’re not on that list or haven’t made yourself visible, chances are they won’t notice you. Your job is to proactively put yourself on their radar.
Contact Coaches in Advance
Don’t wait for coaches to notice you; reach out proactively before the tournament. Use these steps to increase your visibility:
Research Attending Schools: Check the event’s website for a list of college programs that will be present.
Send Personalized Emails and Post on Social Media
Combining email with strategic social media use creates a powerful strategy to connect with coaches.
Email Essentials
Personalize Each Email: Address the coach by name and include specific details about their program to show you’ve done your research.
Be Clear and Concise: Share essential details like your positions, stats, and tournament information upfront.
Attach Links: Highlight reels and recruiting profiles are must-haves.
Ask for Engagement: Invite them to attend your games or ask for their feedback.
Professional Profiles: Create social media accounts focused on your athletic career, with clean profile photos and detailed bios.
Post Regularly: Share game highlights, training updates, and academic achievements. Use relevant hashtags like #StudentAthlete and #CollegeRecruiting.
Engage Coaches: Follow schools and coaches on social media. Like their posts and tag them strategically when sharing your schedules or highlights.
Send Thoughtful DMs: Reach out directly with concise, professional messages that share your details and game schedule.
Always maintain a professional online presence. Coaches often check athletes’ profiles to learn more about their personalities, so avoid posting anything inappropriate or controversial.
Follow Up After the Tournament
Your work doesn’t stop when the event ends. Follow up with coaches at schools you’re targeting to continue building connections.
Send a Thank-You Email: Mention if they watched you play and ask for their impressions.
Show Your Interest: Reaffirm your enthusiasm for their program and ask what they recommend as your next steps.
Stay Persistent: If a coach doesn’t reply immediately, follow up after a week or two with a polite message.
Final Thoughts
Showcase tournaments are an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your talent and character to college coaches. Preparing in advance, combining email and social media, and following up afterward will help you stand out.
Most importantly, remember why you play the game—because you love it. When you’re enjoying yourself, it shows, and coaches are naturally drawn to athletes who compete with passion. Good luck!

Each week, we’ll be featuring updates on recruiting announcements to give you an inside look at what it takes to compete in college soccer. By examining real recruiting classes, you’ll gain insight into the standards, skills, and backgrounds needed to stand out to college programs.
To kick things off, we’re spotlighting Binghamton Women’s Soccer and their freshly announced Class of 2025. This team, competing in the America East Conference, finished the 2024 season with a solid 7-6-5 record. With an impressive group of incoming players, Binghamton continues to build its roster for future success.
Meet the Class of 2025
Total Recruits: 9
Background: 4 ECNL (Elite Clubs National League) and 5 GA (Girls Academy) players
Current RPI (Rating Percentage Index): #193
These stats show the diversity and talent that Binghamton has attracted. The mix of ECNL and GA recruits, two of the nation’s top youth soccer leagues, demonstrates the high level of competition these players have already faced. With both leagues producing top collegiate athletes.
Recruit Highlights:
Sam Brett: Cedar Stars Academy GA, led team to 2023 Northeast Division championship.
Mackenzie Brotherston: Cedar Stars Academy GA, four-year ODP Final State Team member.
Bella Grace Dunn: GSA ECNL, ECNL Southeast All-Conference, ECNL National Team Camp invitee.

How Does Your Resume Measure Up?
Take a step back and ask yourself—how does your resume compare to top recruits? While over 90% of Division 1 athletes come from elite leagues like ECNL or GA, remember, it’s not the only path to D1. However, most D1 coaches focus their scouting efforts in these leagues, which makes competing at that level a significant advantage. That said, don’t limit yourself to Division 1. There are incredible opportunities in D2, D3, and NAIA programs. Finding the level that fits you best will make your recruiting process smoother and more rewarding. Stay focused, stay realistic, and discover where you can truly shine!
