The Truth About Recruiting, for Players and Families!

The Truth About Recruiting, for Players and Families!

Originally, this started as an email I wrote to my clients. But as I read over it, I realized it has valuable advice for anyone navigating the college soccer recruiting process. Whether you’re a player or parent, I hope these insights encourage and guide you on this challenging, yet rewarding, journey.

Folks,

I hope this email finds you well as we head into the final stretch of the spring season.

With the Fall High School season starting to wind down, I wanted to take a moment to reiterate some key points about the recruiting process and offer some insights to help you stay focused and encouraged.

Recruiting Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

The recruiting process moves like an iceberg. You may not see much happening on the surface, but progress is being made underneath. It’s a long game that requires patience, as it often feels like a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Exciting opportunities can suddenly be followed by stretches of silence or uncertainty, leaving you wondering if you’re making progress.

The truth is, these ups and downs are normal. It’s something nearly everyone goes through, so if you’re feeling frustrated or stuck, know that you’re not alone.

Think of recruiting as a journey, not a destination. It’s not about rushing to the finish line but about building a strong foundation for your future. Each step, no matter how small, contributes to your overall progress. For example, even if a coach doesn’t respond to your email right away, they may have taken note of your name or performance. Sometimes, the seeds you plant today take weeks or months to grow.

It’s also important to remember that every player’s journey is unique. Some athletes may receive offers early, while others may find their opportunities later in the process. Comparing yourself to others can be discouraging, so focus on your own path and trust that your hard work will pay off in time.

Persistence Makes All the Difference

Success in recruiting comes down to persistence and consistency. Talent is important, but consistent effort is what truly sets athletes apart. This means grinding through the effort, evaluating your results, and doing it all over again. Recruitment isn’t about a single action; it’s about many small, intentional steps.

Keep communicating with coaches. Attend events. Share updates on your growth. On our side, we’re working hard to amplify your efforts by creating social media content, sending personalized emails to coaches, and keeping programs updated on your progress. While we don’t notify you every time we complete these tasks (it would slow things down), we always share responses or feedback that matter.

Persistence also means staying engaged even when things feel slow. For instance, if you haven’t heard back from a coach, don’t be afraid to follow up. A polite, professional follow-up email can make all the difference in showing your interest and commitment. Coaches are busy, and sometimes a gentle nudge is all it takes to get their attention.

Additionally, persistence isn’t just about reaching out to coaches—it’s about improving your game. Use this time to work on your skills, fitness, and mental toughness. Attend extra training sessions, watch game footage to analyze your performance, and seek feedback from your coaches or mentors. The more you invest in yourself, the more you’ll stand out to college programs.

Every Step Brings You Closer

Every game, showcase, or email sent is progress. Each step is part of laying the foundation for your success. Progress might not always feel immediate, but every action you take counts toward your long-term goals.

It’s also crucial to stay proactive. Keep putting yourself in a position for opportunities, even if the results take time. Trust that your hard work is accumulating and will eventually pay off.

For example, attending showcases and tournaments is a great way to get noticed by college coaches. Even if you don’t receive immediate feedback, your presence at these events helps build your visibility. Make sure to follow up with coaches after events, thanking them for their time and expressing your interest in their program. These small gestures can leave a lasting impression.

Another way to stay proactive is by maintaining a strong online presence. Update your recruiting profile regularly with new highlights, stats, and achievements. Share your progress on social media, tagging coaches and programs you’re interested in. This not only keeps you on their radar but also shows your dedication and enthusiasm for the sport.

Remember, progress isn’t always linear. There may be setbacks or moments of doubt, but each step you take brings you closer to your goals. Celebrate small victories along the way, whether it’s a personal best in training, a positive response from a coach, or a strong performance in a game. These milestones are proof that your hard work is paying off.

Stay Committed to the Journey

The recruiting process can feel overwhelming, but with determination and focus, you’ll get there. Remember, you’re not in this alone. We’re here to guide you, answer questions, and strategize your next moves.

It’s important to stay committed to the journey, even when it feels challenging. Surround yourself with a strong support system, including family, friends, and mentors who can provide encouragement and guidance. Lean on them during tough times and celebrate your successes together.

Staying committed also means staying true to your goals and values. Think about what you’re looking for in a college program—academics, athletics, location, team culture—and use these criteria to guide your decisions. Don’t feel pressured to accept an offer that doesn’t align with your vision for the future.

Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the process. While recruiting can be stressful, it’s also an exciting time filled with opportunities to grow as an athlete and person. Embrace the challenges, learn from your experiences, and savor the moments that make this journey worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

Keep grinding, stay focused, and don’t lose sight of your goals. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with persistence, it will come!
