🚨The No-BS Guide to Crushing ID Clinics!

It’s That Time of Year: Winter ID Clinics

It’s that time of year again when colleges host their winter ID clinics—a crucial opportunity for players to showcase their skills and make an impression.

When it comes to ID clinics, preparation doesn’t lie. Coaches can easily spot who’s put in the work and who hasn’t. If you want to stand out and leave your mark, here’s how to do it right:

Do Your Homework

  • Know the program inside and out—style, values, expectations.

  • Research their recent games, coaching philosophy, and team culture. Showing you’ve done your homework demonstrates genuine interest and sets you apart.

Reach Out Beforehand

  • Personal, genuine emails > cookie-cutter spam.

  • Introduce yourself, share your interest, and mention why their program excites you. A thoughtful email can make a coach remember your name before you even step on the field.

  • Are you a fit for their program? Are they still recruiting players for your class and position?

This step is crucial—it shows initiative and helps you understand if the clinic is worth your time. Plus, it puts you on the coach’s radar before you even step on the field. Don’t just show up unannounced!

Show Up Ready

  • Be fit, sharp, and prepared to perform.

  • Coaches notice players who are physically prepared and mentally focused. Arrive early, warm up properly, and show you’re ready to compete.

Your Resumé Matters

  • ⚽️ Played for a top program?

  • 95% of Female D1 commits come from ECNL or GA leagues, and for Males, it’s MLS Next or ECNL. If you’re not in one, you’ll need to work harder to prove you belong, but it’s possible with the right mindset and preparation.

Stand Out on the Field

  • Showcase your strengths: speed, vision, leadership.

  • Coaches are looking for players who excel in specific areas, so lean into what makes you unique. Be vocal—encourage your teammates, communicate effectively, and show you’re a team player.

Off the Field Counts Too

  • Respect everyone—staff, players, counselors.

  • Coaches notice how you treat others, and a positive attitude can leave a lasting impression. Be polite, approachable, and someone others want to be around.

Follow Up Like a Pro

  • After camp, send a thoughtful email.

  • Reference a specific play, moment, or conversation from the clinic to show you were engaged. A personal follow-up can keep you on a coach’s radar long after the event.

Be prepared. Be relentless. Make it count. 💪
