Recruitment Roadblocks: Colleges Grapple with Roster Restrictions!
Welcome to the Special Edition of ‘So You Want to Play College Soccer’!
Since the NCAA lawsuit settlement, we're unfortunately lacking fresh updates on the roster limit situation in Division 1 college soccer.
What appears evident is that Schools WILL encounter roster limits if they provide payments or benefits to student-athletes as permitted by the NCAA Injunctive Relief Settlement. The big question now is which schools will opt in and which will opt out.
We chatted with two head coaches from 'mid majors' this morning, who shared valuable insights into the challenges they're grappling with due to very little guidance from their Athletic Directors. Recruitment plans for 2025 and 2026 are currently paused, unless their numbers are notably low (below 28)
Recent reports from @imyouthsoccer on X highlight a worrying trend where 11 players from the 2025 class saw their verbal commitments retracted in the last three days. The reasons cited include "roster limits" and "funding issues," causing widespread concern. Athletes from major conferences like ACC, Big 10, SEC, A10, and MAC have been impacted by this development.
The 2025 D1 class should remain vigilant for potential changes, while 2026 prospects should anticipate delays in offers and visits as colleges navigate these adjustments. Players should also consider keeping their options open and exploring opportunities beyond Division 1. Exceptional schools can be found at the Division II, Division III, Junior College (JUCO), and NAIA levels.
Stay tuned for more updates!

Understanding the Division 1 Women’s Soccer recruitment opportunities for 2025
Further insights shared by our friends at X - @imyouthsoccer!
They have observed an increasing number of inquiries from uncommitted 2025 prospects seeking clarity on potential opportunities within Division 1 collegiate soccer.
While the landscape varies across programs, they have compiled a general overview of where each conference stands in terms of available spots and will delve into specific conference details in the forthcoming days to highlight programs with limited vacancies in their 2025 recruiting class.
It is worth highlighting that there may be approximately 5% of verbal commitments that are currently unaccounted for, potentially resulting in around 100 fewer spots than indicated.
Presently, there appear to be roughly 340 vacancies out of the original 10,000+ allocated spots for players in Division 1 soccer. This equates to approximately 3-4% availability. However, it is crucial to consider that this scenario remains subject to change as coaches continue to assess their schools roster spot limitations.
